Guide to Success
Beckemeyer Elementary School Expectations & Policies
At Beckemeyer Elementary School, we strive to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where every student can thrive. The following expectations and policies are designed to help students succeed academically, socially, and personally.
1. Attendance and Punctuality
Your child’s regular attendance is extremely important for academic success. Most elementary learning happens through direct instruction, peer interaction, hands-on materials, and classroom technology. Students who have poor attendance fall at a serious academic disadvantage. Consistent absences and tardiness can also set life-long habits for poor work ethic later in life.
Hillsboro District #3 Elementary Schools strictly enforce the attendance policy outlined in your student handbook. The following procedures ensure fairness and consistency:
Absences
-
Reporting Absences: Parents/guardians must call the school each day their child is absent. If the school is not notified, staff will contact the parent/guardian. Absences not verified will be considered unexcused.
-
7th Cumulative Absence: A letter will be sent home reviewing the attendance policy.
-
10th Cumulative Absence: A referral will be made to the Regional Office of Education (ROE) Truancy Officer, who will discuss your child’s attendance pattern and the consequences of continued absences. Illinois law requires adults with custody of children ages 7–17 to ensure regular school attendance.
Tardiness
Students who are consistently late are at a significant disadvantage. Procedures for tardiness include:
-
5th Tardy: A letter will be sent reviewing the tardiness policy.
-
7th Tardy: A referral will be made to the ROE Attendance Specialist.
-
10th Tardy: A referral will be made to the ROE Truancy Officer.
Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential for academic growth, social development, and lifelong success.
2. Respect and Behavior
-
Show Kindness: Students should treat peers, teachers, and staff with respect.
-
Positive Communication: Parents and students are expected to communicate respectfully with school staff.
-
Resolve Conflicts Peacefully: Students are encouraged to seek help from an adult when challenges arise.
3. Academic Responsibility
-
Complete Assignments: Homework and classwork should be completed on time.
-
Participate and Engage: Students should actively participate in lessons and give their best effort.
-
Embrace Learning: Mistakes are part of learning—students are encouraged to ask questions and persevere.
4. Care for School and Personal Property
-
Respect Materials: Students are responsible for school property and the belongings of others.
-
Bring Only Appropriate Items: Personal items should follow school guidelines.
5. Health and Safety
-
Follow Safety Rules: Students must follow all safety procedures at school, on the playground, and on the bus.
-
Stay Home When Sick: Parents should keep children home when ill and notify the school.
-
Practice Good Hygiene: Handwashing and personal cleanliness help keep everyone healthy.
6. Parent Involvement
-
Stay Informed: Parents are encouraged to read newsletters, emails, and updates on the school website.
-
Support Learning at Home: Reading with your child and helping with homework reinforces classroom learning.
-
Engage in Conferences and Events: Participating in school activities and parent-teacher conferences strengthens student success.
7. Technology Use
-
Use Responsibly: Students should follow school rules when using devices or the internet.
-
Parental Guidance: Parents should monitor technology use at home and encourage safe online habits.
By following these expectations, students will be positioned to succeed academically, socially, and personally, while parents remain engaged partners in their child’s education. Thank you for helping us create a positive and productive learning environment!
